One small habit can change everything

One small habit can change everything

Have you ever wanted to make a change in your life but didn’t know where to start?

Us humans are a funny breed. We both crave the comfort of routine and familiarity and also want to completely shake up our lives every now and again.

But implementing any kind of change in life can feel like a massive task, and it’s easy to put it off because it feels too hard.

The thing is, change doesn’t have to be a big, scary thing. Have you ever heard the saying, "small things make a big difference"?

That’s the basics of of micro-habits – tiny actions that slowly build up and, before you know it, they’ve made a huge change to your life.

What are micro-habits?

Say you want to get into hiking, but the idea of on long 10km hikes feels impossible. Instead of jumping straight in, it starts with something simple… like taking a short walk around the block after dinner. Just ten minutes. Not too much effort, right?

But that little post-dinner walk becomes a habit. Soon, it’s 20 minutes, then 30. Next thing you know, a 10km hike doesn’t seem so far out of reach.

That’s how micro-habits work. They’re so small and easy that you don’t even realise you're forming new habits that become super easy to stick with.

It doesn’t take much time or energy, and there’s no pressure to do everything at once. Just one small step at a time.

How to get started

The trick with micro-habits is to start small. Like, really, really small. Want to start journaling? Begin by writing one sentence a day. Want to drink more water? Start with just one extra glass.

The goal is to make it so easy that there’s no reason not to do it.

Once you’ve nailed the micro-habit, you can start building on it. One sentence turns into a paragraph. One glass of water becomes three. You get the idea.

The key is consistency, not perfection.

One of the best things about micro-habits is that once you start, they can create a positive snowball effect.

As you keep stacking up those small wins, your brain gets better at making new behaviours feel more natural. Before you know it, changing up your routine starts to feel a whole lot easier.

So, what micro-habit will you start with?

We’re thinking of starting with 20 minutes of yoga a day… does the ‘child’s pose’ for 20 minutes count?
